Here's a nice blog post where David Davenport notes:
Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa is investigating six ministries about their financial practices. Apparently concerned with church leaders who drive nice cars, Grassley wants records of ministry salaries, expense accounts, credit cards, cars and airplanes.
He is talking about this right here. Mr. Grassley is concerned that ministry leaders are living the life of luxury without having to file a 990 (not-for-profit tax return), because churches/ministries are exempted. Maybe Mr. Grassley should investigate how politicians, who have spent 20+ years in the House or Senate, earning less than $200k or so, have become multi-millionaires and own properties and houses all over the world. Their wives wear the best furs and they travel in style like all good millionaires. Doing the math doesn't quite 'splain their lavish lifestyles.
How funny it is that crooked politicians "expose" supposedly corrupt televangelists - who get their money from voluntary donors - while they, the politicians, blatantly use the power of law to steal from people (read: not voluntary) and rape them of their wealth to redistribute part of it and pocket the rest.
But we, who are victims of theft on a massive scale, are supposed to be outraged (!) at people who have the power of personality to persuade others to voluntarily donate to their ministries. I can tell you that Joyce Meyer of Joyce Meyer Ministries will not touch my bonus check this year, but the legalized gangsters in Washington will take a 50% cut right off the top. So who needs to be brought to justice? Doesn't matter, 'cuz the government has the monopoly on violence and coercion while the ministries just try to persuade you to give them your dough.
