Detroit: Dead Frickin' Broke

Detroit is two steps away from receivership. It's gotten so bad that the Detroit city council has had to issue subpoenas to the mayor, police chief, and financial officers of the city, looking for answers.

Mayoral spokesman Howard Hughey said Friday that the administration is deciding how to — or if it should — respond to the subpoenas. “We’re going to look at what they’re upset about, then we’re going to make the decision about how to respond at a later date.”

On a related note, all that was once a staple of the city is vaporizing, and fast. How amazing it is that Hamtramck, the extremely Catholic Polish community (that was once partially bulldozed for an auto plant), has not one Catholic school within its borders any longer. Why? They've all fled the sewer for greener pastures north of Eight Mile Road.

Funny, but I get myriad emails that claim the following: (1) I am always defending Detroit, and (2) I am always bashing Detroit. Both are only partially right, for I do both, depending on time and place and circumstance.

Sometimes, Detroit is bashed unnecessarily by those who haven't a clue. Oftentimes, Detroit is praised by those who haven't a clue. I stand objective in my defenses/takedowns of the city where I was born and lived, for many years. In the end, the hellhole known as Detroit is becoming world-famous for its political incompetence, victimological power structure, and its reputation for pure nastiness. The travel bureau has quite a hill to climb, eh?
